The Sturgis Trojans defeated Battle Creek Pennfield 27-8 on Thursday evening, ending a 20-game losing streak. Brandon Watson of the Sturgis Journal reported on the victory.
The Trojans’ last win had been on October 13, 2023, against Three Rivers, 13-12. Sturgis had come close to breaking the streak the previous week, falling to Coldwater 21-20 in overtime.
The Trojans’ defense played a key role in the win, holding Pennfield scoreless for over three quarters. Melachi Warner intercepted a pass and returned it 43 yards for a touchdown just before halftime. Cristian Alvez added a 7-yard rushing touchdown, giving Sturgis a 13-0 lead at the half.
In the third quarter, Beckett Lamb connected with Hudson Lamb on a 13-yard pass, and Lamb later ran 40 yards for another touchdown. Alvez finished with 87 rushing yards, while Lamb ran for 57. Lamb also completed three of five passes for 49 yards, with Hudson Lamb and Darren Speelman each catching one pass for 24 and 25 yards respectively.
Beckett Lamb led the defense with 7.5 tackles, followed by Hudson Lamb and Liam McKinley with 6.5 tackles each. Warner, McKinley, Naliwajko, and Speelman each recorded an interception. Sturgis will next travel to play Edwardsburg.
