Netflix India is significantly expanding its comedy offerings, moving the genre from individual projects to a core programming pillar. VP of content Monika Shergill explains the strategy is driven by comedy’s ability to cater to diverse audience needs and preferences.
The streamer’s upcoming slate includes a variety of formats, encompassing film, scripted series, stand-up specials, and unscripted shows. Leading the lineup is “Dhamaal 4,” a franchise film, and “Chumbak,” a family comedy created by J.D. Majethia and Aatish Kapadia, known for “Khichdi” and “Sarabhai vs Sarabhai.” “Chumbak” is set in Mumbai and follows the interconnected lives of five families.
Stand-up specials will feature Zakir Khan with “Papa Yaar,” which explores the evolving relationship between a son and his father, and a new show from Sumukhi Suresh titled “Hoemonal.” Season 5 of “The Great Indian Kapil Show” and a second season of Bhuvan Bam’s “Dhindora” are also planned. Samay Raina’s “India’s Got Latent” will receive additional episodes, including a recent installment featuring Varun Dhawan.
Shergill highlighted the success of Vir Das’s five comedy specials, including the International Emmy-winning “Landing,” as evidence of the platform’s ability to serve a broad range of comedic tastes. She noted that audiences desire both familiar content, like the continuing “The Great Indian Kapil Show,” and new, surprising shows, such as “Maamla Legal Hai.” “What connects them is emotional recognition,” she said.
When selecting comedic talent, Netflix prioritizes “a distinctive point of view, a strong idea and the potential for the creative relationship to grow.” Shergill emphasized that a large existing fanbase is not a substitute for compelling content, citing Majethia and Kapadia’s “instinctive understanding of Indian families and communities” as a key factor in the development of “Chumbak.”
Shergill refuted the idea that Indian comedy audiences are fragmenting, stating, “Audiences aren’t dividing, they’re diversifying their own taste.” She observed that viewers may enjoy Kapil Sharma with family and Zakir Khan individually, depending on their mood and company.
