British actor and filmmaker Noel Clarke has been charged with multiple sexual offenses following an investigation that began in 2023. The charges include sexual assault, voyeurism, and exposure. This development comes after Clarke lost a libel case against The Guardian related to allegations of misconduct.
The U.K.’s Crown Prosecution Service authorized London’s Metropolitan Police to charge Clarke after detectives submitted a file of evidence. Clarke was initially arrested in late September 2023, and his London home was searched by police. He was questioned in custody and subsequently released.
In August 2023, Clarke lost a libel case against The Guardian’s publisher, stemming from a 2021 exposé detailing allegations of sexual misconduct from over 20 women. He was ordered to pay £3 million ($4 million) in legal costs. During the six-week trial, more than a dozen women testified against Clarke, claiming personal experiences of misconduct, which he denied.
Katharine Viner, Guardian News and Media editor-in-chief, stated following the ruling, “This judgment is a deserved victory for those women who suffered because of the behavior of Noel Clarke.” Viner also noted that over 20 women testified in the High Court, “refusing to be bullied or intimidated.”
