The sequel to the 1998 film “Practical Magic,” starring Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock, is expected to debut with $30 million to $40 million in North American ticket sales. This would unseat “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” from its six-week reign at the top of the box office.
“Practical Magic 2” aims for an additional $18 million to $25 million internationally, potentially bringing its initial global sales to between $48 million and $65 million. Warner Bros. produced the film with a $75 million budget. The original “Practical Magic” was initially a box office disappointment but later gained a cult following. The sequel, directed by Susanne Bier, follows the daughters of Sally and Gillian Owens as they uncover family secrets and attempt to break a long-standing curse. Dianne Wiest and Stockard Channing reprise their roles, with Joey King and Maisie Williams joining the cast.
Despite the nostalgia factor, reviews for “Practical Magic 2” have been largely negative. Variety’s critic Todd Gilchrist described the movie as “as cumbersome and overlong as the 28-year wait” between installments. This may limit its staying power in theaters.
Also opening this weekend is Disney’s music documentary “Oasis: Don’t Look Back in Anger,” projected to earn $5 million to $7 million from 1,200 theaters. The film follows Liam and Noel Gallagher of Oasis, reuniting for the first time since 2009, and includes the brothers’ first joint interview in two decades. The documentary received positive reviews after premiering at the Venice Film Festival.
As the summer movie season winds down, films like “Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” “The Odyssey,” and “Coyote vs. Acme” are expected to round out the box office charts. “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” is poised to surpass 2015’s “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” ($936 million, not adjusted for inflation) as the highest-grossing domestic film of all time, having already generated $923 million in North America and $2.4 billion globally.
