Martin Herlihy is leaving “Saturday Night Live” after five seasons with NBC. He joined the writing staff for Season 51 after four seasons as a member of the sketch comedy trio Please Don’t Destroy.
Herlihy’s departure follows a cast overhaul after Season 50, which saw Please Don’t Destroy split up. John Higgins also departed the series, while Ben Marshall was promoted to main cast. Herlihy continued as a writer, making occasional on-screen appearances in sketches such as “Blowing It,” “Green Flags,” and segments of his “A Film by Martin Herlihy” series.
As part of Please Don’t Destroy, Herlihy appeared in dozens of sketches, often portraying a fictionalized version of himself. He was featured in the popular “Roast” sketch with Dakota Johnson and was jokingly referred to as a “sad virgin” by Taylor Swift during a sketch. Despite the group no longer appearing together on “SNL,” Please Don’t Destroy remains active, touring and working on projects independently. They co-starred in the 2023 Peacock movie “Please Don’t Destroy: The Treasure of Foggy Mountain.” Herlihy’s recent film credits also include “The Breadwinners,” “Roommates,” “The Running Man,” and “Happy Gilmore 2,” the latter of which he co-wrote with his father, Tim Herlihy, a longtime collaborator with Adam Sandler.
Herlihy is the second major departure from “SNL” ahead of its upcoming Season 52, following Chloe Fineman’s exit in July. Fineman, known for her impressions of Jennifer Coolidge and Drew Barrymore, left after seven seasons. The news of Herlihy’s exit was first reported by LateNighter.
