A trailer has been released for *Villeneuve: Rise of a Legend*, a biopic about the late Formula 1 driver Gilles Villeneuve. The film, starring Remi Goulet as Villeneuve, will premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival.
The film charts Villeneuve’s journey from his rural Quebec roots, where he honed his skills snowmobiling, to the international racing circuit, driven by “an obsession for speed and checkered flags.” The trailer showcases his daring and aggressive driving style, both on and off the track, and doesn’t shy away from the impact his fame had on his family.
Rosalie Bonenfant plays Villeneuve’s wife in the film. A scene in the trailer depicts her scolding him for independently deciding to sell their home to finance his racing career. Later, his father, played by Patrice Robitaille, warns him: “You have a family. You’re not alone anymore.” The film focuses on Villeneuve’s career before his tragic death at Zolder in 1982 while driving for Ferrari.
The film is directed by Yan Lanouette Turgeon and written by Daniel Roby and Guillaume Lonergan. Christian Larouche, Tim Ringuette, and Marc Cote are the producers, with Christian Simoneau, Melanie Villeneuve, and Fabrice Barrilliet serving as executive producers. Larouche and Ringuette stated, “It is a privilege to launch the film at the Toronto International Film Festival and present it to an international audience. Gilles Villeneuve is an iconic Quebec figure whose legacy continues to resonate around the world.” Le Pacte is handling international sales, with the film scheduled to close the TIFF on September 19.
