Virginie Efira will receive the Mill Valley Film Festival’s Screen Artistry Award for her performance in “All of a Sudden.” The film, a French-language debut for director Hamaguchi Ryusuke, earned Efira a Cannes Film Festival award shared with Okamoto Tao.
The Mill Valley Film Festival (MVFF) announced the honor for Efira, recognizing her portrayal of Marie-Lou, a caregiver who advocates for gentler treatment of elderly residents. The film centers on a friendship between Marie-Lou and a Japanese playwright, played by Okamoto, exploring themes of mortality, connection, and obligation.
Rose Kuo, MVFF’s artistic director, stated, “Virginie Efira gives a performance of extraordinary grace and quiet power in ‘All of a Sudden,’ grounding its expansive ideas about career, capitalism and politics in our shared humanity and expressing the profound mystery of human connection. We are honored to recognize her with an MVFF Award.”
Mark Fishkin, founder and director of the festival, described “All of a Sudden” as a deeply life-affirming film, emphasizing the fundamental human need for connection. He said, “That’s a message worth sharing with our audience, and Virginie Efira brings it to life with extraordinary heart.”
Efira has previously won a César Award for “Paris Memories” and has appeared in films such as “Elle,” “Benedetta,” “In Bed with Victoria,” and “Sibyl.” The award is part of the MVFF’s Spotlight program, which honors standout work by film artists at any career stage. MVFF49 will take place October 1-11 across venues in Marin County and the Bay Area and is presented by the California Film Institute.
