The Danish feature film “What Lies Between Us” (“Dobbeltfejl”) has been selected for the Discovery section of the Toronto International Film Festival and is shortlisted as a potential Danish entry for the Oscars. The film, directed by Amalie Næsby Fick, reunites stars Sidse Babette Knudsen and Sofie Gråbøl for their first on-screen collaboration.
The story centers around a scandal in a small Danish town following accusations of sexual assault. Anne Sofie (Sidse Babette Knudsen), a real estate agent and tennis enthusiast, discovers her son Frederik (Viktor Garrison) may be involved and makes a “drastic decision” to protect her family and reputation. The film also follows Sarah (Sofie Gråbøl), mother of Oskar (August Mejlva-Aaen), and Ulrikke (Asta Kamma August), a single mother to NC (Julian Brix), as they navigate the crisis.
Producer Louise Vesth approached Fick in 2023 with the adaptation of Anne Mette Kirk’s book “Dobbelfejl.” Fick, a mother herself, was drawn to the central question of the story: “Would you defend your child—no matter what?” She described the book as a “true page-turner” and wanted to use its premise as a “thriller engine” for the film.
Fick chose to focus the narrative on Anne Sofie, believing her character has the “most interesting journey.” She was keen to explore how Anne Sofie’s determination to protect her son impacts her judgment and behavior. “In all my films and series, I’m interested in characters doing the…”, Fick stated.
