A new documentary, “The Trial of Alec Baldwin,” will offer a detailed look into the actor’s life following the 2021 on-set shooting of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins. Directed by Rory Kennedy, the film provides full access to Baldwin’s experiences, including during his July 2024 trial.
The film centers on the events of October 21, 2021, when Halyna Hutchins was killed by a prop gun held by Alec Baldwin on a movie set. Initially, the incident was widely considered an accident and a traumatic experience for those involved. However, as time passed, questions arose regarding responsibility, guilt, and justice, fueled by Baldwin’s public profile and reputation.
Director Rory Kennedy reached out to Baldwin after the incident and began filming in 2023. Baldwin, after initial hesitation, granted Kennedy complete access to his life throughout the legal proceedings. Filming continued even after Santa Fe County prosecutors dropped two counts of involuntary manslaughter against Baldwin.
Kennedy explained her approach to the story, stating, “This story is a tricky one because there is Halyna, who is the victim in this story and I, of course have enormous empathy for Halyna and her family given my own background and experience,” but also adding, “But I think there should be room to see how there can be more than one victim. There can be a spectrum of victims in different situations, and it’s important to have space for that.”
“The Trial of Alec Baldwin” will be released in theaters across North America starting October 16. The documentary was produced by Kennedy, Mark Bailey, and Julia Marchesi, with executive producers including Jared Underwood and others. The film premiered at the 2025 DOC NYC film festival.
