A new documentary exploring the life and work of Oscar-winning composer Nino Rota will premiere at the Venice Film Festival. The film, titled “Nino: A Film About Nino Rota,” features narration by 17-time Grammy Award winner Sting and interviews with prominent figures in cinema and music.
The documentary, directed by Walter Fasano, adopts a “free and associative narrative form to explore the personal, artistic and spiritual ties that shaped his life, revealing an artist who dedicated himself entirely to music and the ideals it embodies,” according to a statement. Rota is celebrated for composing the scores to Francis Ford Coppola’s “The Godfather” and “The Godfather Part II,” winning an Academy Award for the latter, as well as his frequent collaborations with Federico Fellini on films like “La Dolce Vita,” “8½,” and “Amarcord.” He also composed the music for Luchino Visconti’s “The Leopard.”
Interviews in the film include Oscar-winning composer Alexandre Desplat, filmmaker Park Chan-wook, and Grammy-winning composer and arranger Vince Mendoza. The documentary aims to offer a “vivid portrait of Rota’s creative universe and the profound influence he continues to exert on filmmakers and composers today.”
“Nino: A Film About Nino Rota” is a production of Be Water Film, Sugar Play, Adler Entertainment, I Diavoli, Marco Morabito, and Fasano, in collaboration with Rai Documentari. It received support from MIC-DGCA Fondo per lo sviluppo degli investimenti nel cinema e nell’audiovisivo, Apulia Film Fund, Apulia Film Commission, and Regione Puglia. Be Water Film and Adler Entertainment will co-release the film in Italy. Fasano, a longtime editor of Luca Guadagnino’s films, has previously directed the documentary “Pino” and co-directed “Bertolucci on Bertolucci.”
