Adam Scott fired a five-under 65 on Saturday at the Tour Championship, positioning himself as a contender despite being the oldest player in the field at age 46. He is tied for third, three strokes behind leader Viktor Hovland.
Scott, the 2013 Masters champion, is seeking his first PGA Tour title in over six years and would become the most senior winner of the playoff finale, surpassing Tiger Woods’ 2018 victory when Woods was 42. He stands to win $10 million with a victory. Scott noted he’d be happy with “any tournament” win, but a FedEx Cup championship would be a significant career milestone.
His performance comes after his putter was damaged during travel from the BMW Championship. LAB Golf shipped a replacement, which Scott immediately put into play. “My caddie took the head cover off when we arrived and a spare shaft from a driver got caught up in the [putter] head cover and scratched all across my alignment line,” Scott explained. He converted nearly 132 feet of putts on Saturday, the second-best performance of the season for him.
Scott, ranked 51st in the world with 14 tour titles and 14 international wins, acknowledged the physical challenges of competing against younger players. He joked about being “that guy now” regarding his longevity and admitted to feeling fatigued after a long stretch of summer events. “I think if I’m being honest, even today I felt a little bit fatigued compared to the first two days,” he said.
