Minnesota Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell says the competition between veteran Johnny Hekker and rookie Bret Thorson for the punter position is close, with the ability to hold for field goals playing a key role in the final decision.
The Vikings have been evaluating both Hekker and Thorson throughout training camp and the preseason. Hekker punted nine times during the preseason, averaging 40.0 yards per punt and pinning opponents inside their own 20-yard line five times. Thorson netted 41.5 yards per punt with five punts inside the 20-yard line.
O’Connell stated the decision will be based on a comprehensive review of their performance. “It’s a body of work,” O’Connell told reporters after Friday night’s preseason loss to the Denver Broncos. “Obviously, the games are important, but we've got a bunch of kicks logged [throughout training camp], and we'll take a look at it, as well as the role of holding.”
Initially, Hekker was considered the frontrunner due to his experience as both a punter and a holder. However, Thorson, who attended Georgia, did not have prior experience holding during his college career, as quarterbacks traditionally filled that role at his school. Despite this, Thorson has performed well in the role, with Will Reichard successfully making all his field goal attempts throughout the preseason. No issues with the holds from either player were reported.
O’Connell indicated that Thorson possesses potential and has demonstrated the ability to handle holding duties, leaving the competition open.
