The high school football season kicks off in Berks County with a highly anticipated rivalry game between the Wilson Bulldogs and the Gov. Mifflin Mustangs. The teams will compete for the Gurski-Linn Trophy.
The annual matchup, named after former coaches John Gurski and Ray Linn, carries significant history. Wilson has won the last four contests, dating back to 2022, by an average of 20 points. This year’s game will feature Louisville commit Justice Hardy making his debut for Wilson after transferring from Wyomissing in January.
Wilson head coach Doug Dahms expects a competitive game despite his team’s talent, stating that in this rivalry, the “record books [are] thrown out the window.” Dahms hopes senior quarterback Cole Peterson will manage the game effectively and distribute the ball to playmakers like Hardy, Michael Glover, and the Greer brothers, Monty and Damian. The Bulldogs have aspirations for a section, district, and PIAA Class 6A state playoff run.
Gov. Mifflin, coached by Nick Morrissey, will stick with its traditional Wing-T offense. Senior Patrick Steuer, who rushed for 978 yards and nine touchdowns last year, is expected to be a key player. Morrissey hopes to control the clock and limit Wilson’s possessions. Mifflin’s last victory against Wilson occurred in 2021, when Nick Singleton set a Berks County record with three touchdowns.
