Los Angeles Rams rookie quarterback Ty Simpson finished the preseason with strong performances, though he is expected to redshirt his first year. Simpson completed 18 of 23 passes for 119 yards and a touchdown on Thursday night, capping a preseason where he completed 47 of 60 passes (78.3%) for 382 yards, three touchdowns, and no interceptions.
The No. 13 overall pick in this year’s NFL Draft, Simpson played a half against the Chargers, completing 12 of his first 13 passes. While many completions were short – none exceeding 10 yards – he consistently took what the defense gave him. The Rams staff will look for him to take more chances downfield as he develops.
Despite his successful preseason, Simpson is projected to be the Rams’ third-string quarterback behind Matthew Stafford and Stetson Bennett IV. Bennett has seemingly secured the backup role, as he rested during Thursday’s game while Simpson started. A key play from Simpson came on the Rams’ first touchdown, where he escaped pressure, moved to his left, and threw a touchdown pass to Brennan Presley, showcasing his athleticism.
The Rams had opportunities for more points, driving to the Chargers’ 14-yard line but only managing a field goal, and reaching the 1-yard line only to be stopped on consecutive runs. While these failures weren’t solely Simpson’s fault, touchdowns would have improved the offensive output.
