The Atlanta Falcons have named Tua Tagovailoa as their starting quarterback for Week 1. This comes after the Miami Dolphins released Tagovailoa, incurring a $55.4 million dead cap hit for 2026, and he signed a one-year deal with the Falcons to compete for the position.
According to NFL insider Tom Pelissero, Tagovailoa will start while Michael Penix Jr. recovers from a knee injury. In two preseason games, Tagovailoa completed 76.9% of his passes for 117 yards without throwing a touchdown or interception.
The Dolphins’ decision to move on from Tagovailoa and replace him with Malik Willis resulted in a significant financial penalty. However, it opened the door for Tagovailoa to join the Falcons on an inexpensive contract, offering him a chance to revive his career. A successful season could lead to another starting role in 2027, either with Atlanta or another team.
