Irish boxer Thomas Carty’s fight with Dave Allen at the Katie Taylor undercard in Dublin ended in a no-contest after Carty fell through the ropes in the first round. Carty’s team claims he received two illegal blows to the head, leading to the fall.
Thomas Carty, 30, fell through the ropes during his heavyweight fight against Dave Allen on Saturday at Croke Park in Dublin, which was part of the Katie Taylor retirement event. After receiving oxygen, Carty was escorted from the ring. His team later released a statement explaining the incident.
The statement read: “After just one minute and 30 seconds of Round 1 Thomas Carty had received 2 illegal blows to the back of his head in last night's contest at Croke Park on the Katie Taylor undercard. The second blow [caused] Thomas a momentary lapse forcing Thomas to reach for the ropes to regain his balance and the loose ropes gave way propelling Thomas head first out of the ring causing him to strike his head on a ringside table.”
According to the statement, Carty sustained a suspected concussion and underwent a brain scan at a hospital before returning home to recover. A replay appeared to show Allen striking Carty on the back of the head during a clinch before the fall.
Dave Allen, 34, posted on Instagram, stating: “I've had some bizarre moments in my career but this might top it, hope @_thomascarty is healthy and well and Dublin has a kfc.” He also acknowledged the situation on his Instagram story, saying, “Yes I'm annoyed, I felt good landed a jab and nice double left hook more success in [the] first minute than I've ever had before was very confident it was getting one way and very quickly.”
Allen further claimed, “I threw a legal punch he turned the back of his head into, the rest is up to peoples [sic] own interpretation what's happened. I will give politically correct answers to protect him tbh cos he is a good guy, only he knows the truth of what happened and that's tha [sic].” He later confirmed he had spoken with Carty, stating, “he’s a good fella it's boxing I'm not gonna hold a grudge or have bad feeling over a match, it's a shame but have to move on from it.”
