Barcelona midfielder Gavi is facing increased competition for a starting position following the strong performances of Rodri under new manager Hansi Flick. While Flick values Gavi’s commitment, Rodri’s fitness and tactical influence have altered the balance of Barcelona’s midfield.
Gavi began the season in Barcelona’s starting lineup, appearing in the opening league fixture at Elche. However, a recurrence of a right leg injury forced him to miss subsequent matches against Athletic Club and Rayo Vallecano. During his absence, Rodri capitalized on the opportunity to establish himself in Flick’s plans.
Rodri’s presence alongside Pedri has created a midfield dynamic that limits opportunities for other players. He recently completed 90 minutes against Levante, demonstrating his ability to control possession and cover significant ground, making him a central figure in Flick’s tactics. Gavi has seen his game time reduced, remaining an unused substitute against Valencia and Levante, and receiving only seven minutes of play against Feyenoord.
Despite the reduced playing time, Flick reportedly remains pleased with Gavi’s attitude and work ethic during training. While acknowledging Gavi’s energy, aggression, and versatility, Flick also has Marc Bernal as a preferred interior option when Pedri needs rest, increasing competition for midfield spots. The challenge for Gavi is now to force his way back into the rotation, rather than simply reclaim a guaranteed starting position. Rodri is currently Hansi Flick's preferred choice in midfield.
