ISLAMABAD (AP), Pakistan’s cricket team was fined 50% of their match fee and docked 11 points in the World Test Championship (WTC) cycle for a slow over-rate during the third and final test match against England at Edgbaston, which concluded on Saturday. The International Cricket Council (ICC) announced the sanction on Monday.
The ICC stated that Pakistan was 11 overs short of the target, even after accounting for time allowances. Match referee Ranjan Madugalle imposed the penalty after on-field umpires Paul Reiffel and Chris Gaffaney, third umpire Allahudien Palekar and fourth umpire Russell Warren leveled the charge against the team.
Currently, Pakistan sits at the bottom of the WTC table, having won only two of its nine test matches. They have two test series remaining in the current cycle: a November series against Sri Lanka and a March 2027 series against New Zealand. Pakistan also finished last in the previous WTC cycle.
The team has faced significant upheaval recently. Seven players were removed from the squad after a loss to England at Headingley, where they were defeated by an innings and 194 runs. Senior players Salman Ali Agha, Imam-ul-Haq, and Mohammad Rizwan were sent home following the second test, before England completed a 3-0 series sweep.
