Netflix has announced a new slate of South African content, including expansions of existing series and the addition of new reality shows and films. The move aims to strengthen Netflix’s partnership with the local creative industry and provide entertainment for both South African and international audiences.
A new installment in the “How to Ruin” franchise, “How to Ruin Diwali: Meet the Parents,” will launch on October 30. Produced by Burnt Onion Productions in collaboration with producer Jayan Moodley, the series is described as “another irreverent take on family, love and culture.” The story follows an interracial couple whose engagement brings together two different families, promising humor and drama. This builds on Moodley’s previous work, such as “The Kandasamys,” which also focuses on South African Indian family-centered comedy.
Netflix is also expanding its reality TV offerings in South Africa. Dineo and Zothile “Solo Ntsizwa” Langa will host “Love Is Blind: South Africa,” produced by afrOkaans, which is set to debut later this year. Additionally, “Stars & Vows: Anele and Buzza,” a wedding docu-soap from Dopezuluboi Productions, will also be released later in 2024. BrightFire is developing a new, currently unnamed, dating reality show.
Returning series and film sequels are also part of the content slate. “Blood Legacy” season 2 will launch on September 25, while “Seriously Single Too” and “Another Disaster Holiday” are slated for release in 2026. Second seasons of “Tuiskoms” and “Marked” are also confirmed, and production is underway for “Meet the Khumalos 2.”
Netflix highlighted its ten-year presence in South Africa, noting that local productions have filmed in 20 cities across eight provinces and have supported over 8,000 jobs through partnerships with more than 30 local production companies. Over 300 South African films and series, including originals like “Blood & Water” and “The Polygamist,” have been showcased on the platform. Ben Amadasun, vp of content for Netflix Middle East and Africa, stated the company’s goal is to “share South African stories and voices with the world” and to continue creating “exciting stories that will entertain our members in South Africa and around the world.”
