The Baltimore Orioles defeated the New York Mets 2-1 on Tuesday night at Citi Field, despite a solid outing from Mets pitcher Jonah Tong. Pete Alonso returned to play against his former team, receiving a warm welcome from the crowd.
Tong started strong, striking out Dylan Beavers and retiring Gunnar Henderson in the first inning. However, the Orioles broke the scoreless tie in the second inning when Jackson Holliday looped a single into right field, advanced on a passed ball by Francisco Alvarez, and scored on a double by Heston Kjerstad. The Mets loaded the bases with two outs in the second, but Alvarez struck out, leaving all three runners stranded.
Alonso drew a walk in the third inning but was left on base. Juan Soto singled in the third, and Benge followed with a single, but Jared Young grounded out, ending the inning. In the fourth, A.J. Ewing hit a home run to tie the game at 1-1. Alvarez reached base on an infield hit, but Lindor struck out, leaving him stranded.
Tong pitched a quick sixth inning, retiring the Orioles in order on just six pitches. However, the Orioles took the lead in the seventh inning against Jonathan Pintaro, who replaced Tong, allowing a lead-off double to Christian Encarnacion-Strand.
