USWNT soccer star Trinity Rodman will not be able to attend her boyfriend, Ben Shelton’s, U.S. Open final match on Sunday due to a scheduling conflict with a National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) game. Rodman, a star for the Washington Spirit, is scheduled to play against Boston at 1 p.m. in Washington D.C., just an hour before Shelton is set to face Alexander Zverev at 2 p.m. in Queens.
The game holds playoff implications for the Spirit, who are currently fighting for first place in the league and the NWSL Shield. After a 3-0 loss to Boston, the team trails the defending champion Gotham by five points with six games remaining in the regular season. Rodman, 24, has been present at several of Shelton’s matches during his U.S. Open run, including his quarterfinal win over Carlos Alcaraz.
Rodman and Shelton, who went public with their relationship in March 2025, have supported each other’s careers despite demanding schedules. Shelton quickly traveled to support Rodman after his loss at the ATP finals in November 2025, attending the Washington Spirit’s semifinal win over the Portland Thorns and later the NWSL Championship, where the Spirit lost to Gotham 1-0.
Shelton recently told the ATP Tour, “Some people can say that it’s difficult to maintain a relationship where you have two professional athletes, but in my opinion, to have somebody who understands what you go through is very, very important.” He has the opportunity to become the first American man to win a Grand Slam since Andy Roddick’s U.S. Open title in 2003, and the first Black man to be in the U.S. Open final since Arthur Ashe in 1972.
