Kevin Pietersen has pledged his support for Brendon McCullum’s approach to England’s white-ball cricket, joining as a mentor until the 2027 ODI World Cup. McCullum personally requested Pietersen join the team, despite past criticism from the former batsman.
Pietersen’s appointment has raised eyebrows given his previous critiques of England’s preparation, including questioning their approach to the 2025 ODI series against India. However, McCullum explained he initiated contact with Pietersen and welcomed his critical perspective. “When I rang him the first time, I said, 'Would you be interested in coming to work with England?' He thought I was joking for a start,” McCullum said. “And then he sort of mentioned, I've been quite critical of you guys in the past. I said, I have no problem with that, mate. There are parts of it I agree with, and there are parts I won't agree with. And that's fine. That's what the beauty of Kev coming in.” McCullum highlighted Pietersen’s pedigree as a player and noted many current team members grew up idolizing him.
M McCullum intends for Pietersen to contribute beyond batting, seeking his input on the entire team environment. “He's brought a ton of energy to the setup within the last 24 hours already,” McCullum stated. “I've mentioned to him that I don't want him to just try and be buried in one specific skill set either. I want him to look across the environment and setup, and challenge me privately on ways we can improve or things we can do differently. Our relationship is good.”
Pietersen echoed McCullum’s commitment to improvement, stating on X, “Baz is crystal clear. Our white ball team will leave NO STONE UNTURNED in its pursuit to being the best they can be.”
