LSU football coach Lane Kiffin’s first depth chart ahead of the season opener against Clemson on September 5th features 13 newcomers listed as starters, including seven on offense. Several position battles yielded surprising results, according to The Daily Advertiser.
LSU’s base offensive formation will utilize two slot receivers, one wide receiver, and a tight end, differing from the more common two wide receivers, one slot, and one tight end setup. Sophomore Harlem Berry, a returning running back, is listed as the fourth tailback behind Dilin Jones, Stacey Gage, and Caden Durham.
Malik Elzy is positioned ahead of Jayce Brown at the X receiver position, despite Brown being favored throughout fall camp. Elzy reportedly had a strong camp, but Brown was widely expected to start.
On the defensive line, freshman Deuce Geralds is listed as a starter at defensive tackle. Richard “Big Rich” Anderson, despite a strong preseason, is third behind Geralds and Auburn transfer Malik Blocton. Five-star recruit Lamar Brown is not on the two-deep roster, while several other freshmen – Trenton Henderson, Jaiden Braker, and Damien Shanklin – are included, despite Shanklin missing time due to a coach’s decision.
The starting position at tight end appears to be going to Tamarcus Cooley over Jhase Thomas.
