Tommy Edman delivered a three-run home run in the seventh inning to propel the Los Angeles Dodgers to a 6-5 victory over the Washington Nationals on Saturday night at Dodger Stadium. Edman also made a key defensive play earlier in the game.
The Dodgers jumped to an early lead, scoring two runs in the first inning. Freddie Freeman was hit by a pitch and Mookie Betts singled, setting up RBI singles from Teoscar Hernández and Hunter Feduccia. Washington responded with four runs, challenging Dodgers starter Tyler Glasnow throughout his outing. Glasnow struck out eight but allowed four runs.
Edman’s pivotal moment came in the seventh. After Alex Freeland walked and Kiké Hernández singled, Edman hit a three-run home run off Clayton Beeter, turning a two-run deficit into a one-run lead. “He’s a heck of a ballplayer,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. “You can put him anywhere on the diamond. Makes plays defensively, takes good at-bats. He has the knack for the big hit. And he’s playing his tail off. Obviously we don’t have Shohei, and to be able to put Tommy in there and really still be productive, it's great.”
The Dodgers were playing without Shohei Ohtani for a third straight day, as well as Dalton Rushing, who was scratched with elbow soreness, and Max Muncy, who was sick. Alex Call was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the eighth, adding an insurance run. Closer Tanner Scott secured the win, striking out three batters in the ninth, despite allowing a hit.
Throughout the game, Washington challenged four ball-strike calls via the ABS system, with the last challenge failing on a James Wood strikeout. Edman earlier robbed Daylen Lile of extra bases with a defensive play that drew a “holy shit” reaction from Glasnow.
