Doremus previously wrote and directed "Like Crazy" and "Endings, Beginnings," which was released in 2019. According to Deadline, the pandemic changed things for the filmmaker, and the publication noted that "Endings, Beginnings" now appears to be a prophetic title. Deadline described Doremus as "a true romant" in its coverage.
Hollywood Reporter characterized the film as an "Underbaked Romantic Thought Exercise" in its review headline. Deadline's review described the work as a "Rich And Jazzy Romdram."
