Paramount is developing a movie based on the police procedural “Hawaii Five-O,” with Destin Daniel Cretton set to direct. The project, scripted by Chris Bremner, aims to bring the classic series to the big screen after previous attempts failed.
The original “Hawaii Five-O” premiered in 1968 and ran until 1980, becoming the longest-running police drama on American television. The series starred Jack Lord as detective captain Steve McGarrett, leading a fictional elite state police task force investigating organized crime in Hawaii. A signature element of the show was McGarrett’s catchphrase, “Book ’em, Dano,” directed at his partner, detective Danny Williams, played by James MacArthur, after an arrest.
A reboot titled “Hawaii Five-0” (with a zero instead of the letter “O”) aired on CBS from 2010 to 2020, spanning 10 seasons and 240 episodes. The reboot featured Alex O’Loughlin, Scott Caan, Daniel Dae Kim, and Grace Park, offering a modern take on the cop drama.
Destin Daniel Cretton is known for directing the summer blockbuster “Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” which has earned $924 million domestically and $2.4 billion globally. The film is poised to become the highest-grossing North American release in history, surpassing 2015’s “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” ($936 million, not adjusted for inflation), and is the third-biggest movie worldwide after 2009’s “Avatar” ($2.9 billion) and 2019’s “Avengers: Endgame” ($2.79 billion).
