Netflix’s ‘The Whisper Man’ features Robert De Niro, Michelle Monaghan, and Adam Scott in a thriller based on Alex North’s novel. The film follows Detective Amanda Beck’s investigation into a series of abductions mirroring crimes committed 25 years prior by a serial killer known as the Whisper Man.
The thriller begins with a police search in semi-rural New Jersey for Neil Spencer, a boy abducted the night before. The discovery of another missing boy’s body soon follows. Simultaneously, crime writer Tom Kennedy, played by Adam Scott, moves to his hometown with his eight-year-old son, Jake, hoping for a fresh start after the death of his wife. Jake begins to exhibit unease in their new home and seeks comfort in an imaginary friend.
Detective Beck’s investigation reveals eerie similarities between the recent case and the crimes of Frank Carter, the Whisper Man, who is currently serving a life sentence. Robert De Niro portrays retired Detective Pete Willis, who originally apprehended Carter but has continued to obsess over a sixth victim whose body was never found. Willis is also Tom Kennedy’s estranged father and has never met his grandson.
The investigation gains momentum when Jake is abducted, and clues emerge in the form of a child’s drawing and a cassette recording of the missing boy, mirroring Carter’s methods. The film explores the strained relationship between Tom and his father, noting Pete’s likely dedication to his job and the case consumed him. The identity of the actor playing Frank Carter has not been released at the request of Netflix.
