Atresmedia Cine will be well-represented at the San Sebastián Festival with four films across various sections, alongside the presentation of two series. The company views the festival as a key launchpad for its projects and a means of connecting with audiences.
Four films from Atresmedia Cine will be featured: “El mal padre” is competing in the main competition, while “La Bola Negra” will be shown in the Perlak section (Atresmedia Cine has acquired free-to-air rights to the drama). “Karateka” will screen at the Velodrome, and “Blind Ants” (“Inurri Itsuak”) will open Zinemira. Additionally, Atresmedia Group will present the series “Sira” and “Trazos ocultos.”
Jaime Ortiz de Artiñano, managing director of Atresmedia Cine, emphasized the company’s significant role in Spanish film. “The presence of four films and two series at this year’s San Sebastián Festival demonstrates the strength of a model that drives ambitious projects and accompanies them all the way to their encounters with audiences,” he stated. He also described San Sebastián as “one of the great international showcases for our cinema” and “the starting point for many of our campaigns.”
Ortiz de Artiñano highlighted the company’s strategy, which includes established franchises like “Torrente Presidente,” large-scale productions such as “Karateka” and “La Bola Negra,” and “El mal padre.” He noted that all these projects share “ambition, personality and the ability to move and connect.” He believes the future of Spanish cinema lies in attracting larger audiences, stating, “The future of Spanish cinema does not lie in making more films, but in getting more people to want to see them.”
He also pointed to partnerships with platforms like Movistar Plus’ Original “La Bola Negra” and Netflix’s involvement in “Karateka” as crucial for enabling more ambitious Spanish film productions.
