Andre Benjamin and Cathy Moriarty have joined the cast of the upcoming Netflix live-action “Scooby-Doo” series, titled “Scooby-Doo: Origins.” The series, currently filming in Atlanta, is scheduled to premiere in 2027.
Benjamin, known for his work with Outkast and roles in films like “Jimi: All Is By My Side” and television shows such as “Dispatches From Elsewhere,” and Moriarty, acclaimed for her performance in “Raging Bull” and recent TV appearances in “Elsbeth” and “Will Trent,” will both appear in recurring roles. Character details for both actors are being kept confidential.
The series will feature Maxwell Jenkins as Fred Jones, Tanner Hagen as Norville “Shaggy” Rogers, Abby Ryder Fortson as Velma Dinkley, and Mckenna Grace as Daphne Blake. Paul Walter Hauser is also cast in an undisclosed role, alongside Sara Gilbert, Bruce McGill, and Sherilyn Fenn.
The show is described as a modern reimagining of the classic cartoon. The story follows Shaggy and Daphne as they become involved in a mystery surrounding a lost Great Dane puppy who may have witnessed a supernatural murder during their final summer at camp. They team up with Velma and Freddy to solve the case, which threatens to reveal their secrets.
Josh Appelbaum and Scott Rosenberg are writers and showrunners, also executive producing with André Nemec, Jeff Pinkner, and Adrienne Erickson under Midnight Radio. Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, and Leigh London Redman will executive produce via Berlanti Productions. Toby Haynes will executive produce and direct the first episode. Warner Bros. Television is producing the series.
