Australian supernatural horror film “Effigy” has completed production and released its first look images. The film, set in 1989 England, centers on the Marsh family and a violent haunting triggered by the discovery of a mysterious effigy doll. The entity fixates on their daughter, leading paranormal investigators to become involved in a traumatic case.
Directed by Myles McEwen and Ripley Stevens, “Effigy” stars Chris Gun, who previously portrayed Noel Gallagher in “Better Man.” Lauren Koopowitz, known for her voice work in “Hollow Knight: Silksong” and her appearance in the “Ash Vlogs” YouTube series, plays an exorcist. David Daradan and Saya Kraetzer portray Daniel and Ashleigh Marsh, the parents at the center of the haunting.
McEwen stated the filmmakers approached “Effigy” differently than their previous work, “Nightfall: A Paranormal Investigation,” which is slated for worldwide release soon. “We poured our hearts and souls into this one. Unlike our previous features, we followed a standard storytelling model and chose to explore a depression that many of us can relate to. Through this, there’s a genuine heartbeat and soul that emerged from the film. We shot and designed the film to feel straight out of 1989, capturing the magic of cinema from that era.”
Executive producer Michael Kraetzer believes “Effigy” elevates the horror genre. “Effigy takes supernatural Horror to new heights. An exorcism with psychosexual undertones. It’s genuinely terrifying to watch.” McEwen cryptically teased audiences, stating, “Let’s just say … she’s already here.” The film is a Black Mandala Films production, with Nicolás Onetti also serving as executive producer. The filmmakers plan to premiere the film at a major festival.
