William Jewell College announced the death of junior running back MicahJo Barnett after he suffered a medical emergency on the sideline during Saturday’s home opener against Fort Lewis.
Barnett began experiencing what Liberty Fire EMS described as “seizure-like symptoms” during the first quarter, leading to a suspension of play. The game was later called off. William Jewell players were reportedly emotional as they left the facility, according to Harold R. Kuntz of Fox4 KC.
“William Jewell College and the Liberty, Missouri community mourn the passing of Micah Jo Barnett,” the school said in a statement. “Our thoughts and prayers are with Micah Jo's family, our students, the Cardinal Football family, and the rest of our community during this time of loss.”
A vigil to honor Barnett is scheduled for Saturday night.
