Indian studio Sagar Pictures Entertainment will release a seven-part theatrical franchise adapted from the “Bhagavata Mahapurana,” beginning with “Shrimad Bhagavatam Part I: Vishnurata” in 2027. The film centers on Lord Shri Krishna and aims to depict a spiritual universe of devotion and dharma.
The first teaser poster for “Shrimad Bhagavatam Part I: Vishnurata” has been unveiled. The title, translating to “the one always protected by Vishnu,” refers to King Parikshit from the “Bhagavata Mahapurana.” Akash Sagar Chopra and Amrit Sagar Chopra are co-directing the film, with Akash serving as SPE’s CEO and Amrit as senior vice president of content. The brothers are the grandsons of filmmaker and producer Ramanand Sagar, who created the 1987 television adaptation of the “Ramayana” epic.
According to the Chopra brothers, they spent six years studying the “Bhagavatam” before beginning production, believing the stories are both spiritual knowledge and part of India’s “civilizational memory.” They stated, “Our grandfather brought the ‘Ramayana’ to the screen, and it became a defining medium through which a generation experienced the epic. But we cannot recreate what he did, nor would we try. Every generation must discover its own cinematic language, shaped by the medium and possibilities of its time.”
The filmmakers describe the scale of the text as demanding “a vast cinematic canvas,” and production is nearing completion. They aim to combine expansive production design and visual craft drawn from devotional paintings, sculptures, and sacred imagery, creating a scale unprecedented for the genre. “Across centuries, the divine has taken form in our paintings, sculptures and sacred imagery,” Akash Sagar Chopra and Amrit Sagar Chopra said. “We wanted to remain true to the images we have grown up seeing, recognizing and praying to – not reinventing them for the sake of reinvention, but bringing them to life with the realism, authenticity and scale that cinema today makes possible. Our attempt with ‘Vishnurata’ is to bring that familiar and sacred visual memory to life and to allow audiences to experience the ‘Bhagavata Mahapurana’ on the largest cinematic canvas possible.” The film will be released globally in major premium formats.
