Netflix’s animated comedy “Dang!” centers on siblings Andrew and Eunice Dang, two millennial burnouts living in New York City. The series, created by Andrew Law, shares similarities with “Broad City” but focuses on the dynamic between the two and their older sister, Ruthie.
The premise revolves around the arrival of Ruthie (Stephanie Hsu), an uptight lawyer experiencing a midlife crisis, who disrupts the siblings’ established, albeit aimless, lives. Eunice argues that Ruthie shares a secret language with their parents, to which Ruthie responds, “I just speak Mandarin because I paid attention in Chinese school.”
The status quo shifts when Ruthie becomes pregnant through an extramarital affair and moves to New York. Eunice excitedly proclaims, “You’re one of us now, you stupid pregnant bitch!” The eight-episode season then explores Andrew and Eunice’s lives while delaying the reveal of Ruthie’s pregnancy. Episodes include Eunice trying an experimental diet for an unpaid internship and Andrew mentoring a young man from his church youth group, accompanied by the song “Come Inside of Me.”
Each character is defined by specific details: Ruthie’s preferred children’s book is “B Is for Border Security: How to Raise a Political Centrist”; Andrew is a people-pleaser who struggles to order food; and Eunice possesses a sixth sense for when uncensored videos resurface online.
