Michael Bay and Benedict Cumberbatch are among those set to be interviewed by Philomena Cunk, the character played by Diane Morgan, in the upcoming mockumentary series “Cunk on Cinema.”
The three-part series will chart the history of cinema and the world’s fascination with movies, described as Cunk’s “most glamorous series to date.” A first look reveals Cunk examining a Sony Venice Digital Cinema Camera, the same model used by Michael Bay on “6 Underground.” The series will cover topics ranging from the invention of the camera to the New Wave filmmakers of the 1960s, the rise of CGI, and the potential future of AI in film.
Cunk will attempt to “demystify it all while sitting in lumpy seats with stale popcorn, asking herself where did cinema come from? And why? What does it want? And why can’t it tell us?”
Alongside Bay and Cumberbatch, other industry professionals participating in the series include composer Daniel Pemberton (“Project Hail Mary”), screenwriter Steven E. de Souza (“Die Hard,” “Commando”), Oscar-nominated cinematographer Seamus McGarvey (“Avengers Assemble,” “Atonement”), critic Mark Kermode, and documentary-maker and author Mark Cousins (“The Story of Film: An Odyssey”).
“Cunk on Cinema” is the latest installment in the British mockumentary franchise created by Charlie Brooker, following previous series focusing on life, Earth, Shakespeare, and Britain. Brooker leads a writing team that includes Ben Caudell, Erika Ehler, Eli Goldstone, Jason Hazeley, Dan Maier, Diane Morgan, Joel Morris, Michael Odewale, Kali Varghese, and Sam Ward. Al Campbell is directing.
The series will debut on BBC iPlayer and BBC Two, and on Netflix outside of the U.K. and Ireland. Executive producers are Charlie Brooker, Jessica Rhoades, Diane Morgan, and Sam Ward. Navi Lamba is the BBC commissioning editor and Mark Kinsella is co-executive producer for Pacesetter Productions.
