Alec Burleson hit a home run for the St. Louis Cardinals in Monday's game against the San Francisco Giants, but the Giants ultimately won in extra innings. The game was vital for the Cardinals' playoff push.
The San Francisco Giants took an early lead in the bottom of the 1st inning when Turner Hill walked and Rafael Devers hit an RBI double off of Cardinals starter Michael McGreevy, making the score 1-0. The Giants extended their lead to 2-0 in the 3rd inning after Christian Koss reached on an infield single and scored on a sacrifice fly by Bryce Eldredge. Devers added another double in the 5th, followed by a double from Eldredge that scored Devers, increasing the Giants' lead to 3-0.
The Cardinals scored their first run in the top of the 6th inning when Alec Burleson launched a 431-foot home run into the bay, cutting the Giants' lead to 3-1. In the 7th inning, Nolan Gorman walked and Nathan Church hit an RBI double, bringing the score to 3-2. McGreevy pitched 6 2/3 innings, allowing 2 earned runs with 4 strikeouts and 2 walks. Justin Bruihl finished the 7th inning with a groundout, after a close play at first base where Burleson had to drag his foot across the base.
The Cardinals attempted to build momentum in the 8th inning after Ivan Herrera singled, and Victor Scott II was sent in to pinch-run. Burleson then hit a deep flyball to center, but Scott II did not attempt to tag up, resulting in the first out. Jordan Walker then singled, putting runners at first and second with one out, but Leo Bernal grounded into a double play ending the inning.
