Joe Worrall joined Wrexham to prove himself, particularly to his former club Burnley, after limited playing time at Turf Moor. The 29-year-old center-back left Burnley on deadline day after making only eight league starts in two years. He is now set to face his former teammates when Wrexham hosts Burnley on Tuesday.
Worrall expressed frustration with his lack of opportunities at Burnley, especially after contributing to their promotion from the Championship. “It was a really hard team to get into after the injury. I kind of swallowed it up and played like a bit of a back-seat role in that promotion season,” he said. He believes he could have offered more in the Premier League but wasn’t favored by manager Scott Parker. “I could have helped more last year, but my opportunities were sparse – and I thought I took them when they were given. For whatever reason I was just not in the eye of the manager or the club.” He suggested there was more to team selection than met the eye.
Worrall, who captained Nottingham Forest to play-off success in 2024, is aiming for a third career promotion with Wrexham. “I think I've got something to prove to myself, first and foremost,” Worrall stated. “But also can I and this club do it? Can we get promoted to the Premier League, whether it be this season, next season, the season after?” He acknowledges Wrexham’s strong foundations and mentality, noting their near miss in the play-offs last season.
Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson has praised Worrall’s early influence, describing him as “fantastic for us in terms of his personality.” Worrall is currently awaiting his first start, having watched Wrexham secure two consecutive clean sheets from the bench, following wins against Millwall and a draw against Swansea. He expects to bide his time for a place in the starting line-up.
