Cardiff City head coach Brian Barry-Murphy has called for patience after the team’s winless start to the Championship season. The Bluebirds are currently in the relegation places after a 2-0 defeat to Portsmouth on Saturday, leaving them with three points from five games.
Barry-Murphy acknowledged the challenging schedule and the squad’s size as contributing factors to the slow start. “It’s a tough schedule. We knew these games were very close together in this opening period. With the squad the size of ours, that has its challenges,” he said. He stressed the importance of remaining calm, stating, “I wouldn't get too carried away by where we are. As I say, it's still very early in the season. We have to remain calm.”
The coach, who led Cardiff to promotion from League One last season, emphasized the team’s existing familiarity and the need for improvement. “We have worked together for a period with a lot of these players. We know how we work, and we've got to improve. That will remain the case,” Barry-Murphy stated. He also highlighted the team’s youth, noting they need support and consistency in their play.
Cardiff faces Stoke on Tuesday evening at the Cardiff City Stadium. Barry-Murphy confirmed there have been no changes to the injury situation, with club captain Calum Chambers’ return timescale remaining unclear, alongside Dylan Lawlor and Will Fish. Forward Isaak Davies sustained a hamstring injury in training on Friday and is unlikely to be available for the match. “Isaak Davies felt his hamstring in training on Friday. I imagine he won't be available on Tuesday,” Barry-Murphy explained. Despite the challenges, Barry-Murphy affirmed the team’s ability to compete. “We have no choice. The players who are here will have our full support to help them try to produce a performance to win. We are very confident we can win games at this level, and I'm sure we will,” he said.
