Billy Joel revealed he underwent brain surgery to address symptoms of normal pressure hydrocephalus, a condition diagnosed in 2025. The surgery involved the implantation of a shunt to alleviate pressure on his brain and improve his balance and memory.
The 77-year-old musician first disclosed his diagnosis in May 2025, leading to the cancellation of several concerts. He initially performed two songs with a tribute band in January of this year, but his doctors advised him to avoid excessive stress. His neurologist recommended a shunt be implanted, as the condition could worsen over time.
Joel admitted he was hesitant about the procedure, which involved drilling a hole in his skull. However, after researching the potential benefits, he agreed, hoping it would improve his balance and memory. “I don’t want to lose my marbles,” he said. He noted the surgery improved his memory, balance, and overall function, and realized performing live was akin to receiving concussions.
“I’m ok. I want people to know, don’t worry about me. I’m still here,” Joel assured fans on SiriusXM’s Billy Joel channel Wednesday.
