The death toll from recent earthquakes in Venezuela has risen to at least 920, with over 3,000 injured, according to reports. Rescuers are racing against time to find survivors trapped under rubble.
The initial earthquake struck on Tuesday, and was followed by several aftershocks, including two more earthquakes reported on Wednesday. RT reported that the death toll had risen to 1,430 as of Wednesday, while Mercopress stated at least 920 people were confirmed dead. The latter outlet noted teams were still rescuing people alive despite the time elapsed.
Mercopress also reported earlier that the quake death toll climbed to 589 as the rescue window narrowed, citing the World Health Organization’s assertion that the first 72 hours are decisive for finding victims alive.
The earthquakes have impacted numerous communities, and emergency services are struggling to reach all affected areas. The extent of the damage is still being assessed.
