LOS ANGELES (AP), Jayden Maiava threw five touchdown passes, including two to freshman tight end Mark Bowman, as No. 14 Southern California defeated Louisiana 49-30 on Saturday night. The Trojans improved to 3-0 with the victory.
Maiava completed 19 of 29 passes for 261 yards with one interception. Freshman receiver Trent Mosley also scored a touchdown and returned a punt 86 yards for another touchdown. King Miller rushed for 128 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries, contributing to USC’s 494 total yards.
Louisiana’s Lunch Winfield threw for 212 yards and rushed for 91 yards, scoring three total touchdowns, while Steven Blanco added a rushing touchdown. However, the Ragin' Cajuns (1-1) struggled to capitalize on early opportunities. Avery Demery intercepted Maiava on USC’s opening possession, but Louisiana only managed a 47-yard field goal by Tony Sterner.
USC broke the game open late in the second quarter with two key plays. A pass intended for Louisiana safety Maurion Eleam deflected off his hands and landed in the hands of freshman wide receiver Kayden Dixon-Wyatt for a 19-yard touchdown, giving USC a 21-10 lead. Immediately following, Mosley’s 86-yard punt return extended the Trojans’ advantage.
USC had eight gains of at least 10 yards in the game, something that had been lacking in their first two games. The Trojans will next play at Rutgers next Saturday. Louisiana will host UAB next Saturday.
