Mikel Arteta praised Bruno Guimaraes’ ‘magic’ as Arsenal defeated Sunderland 2-0 at The Stadium of Light, preserving their perfect record in the Premier League this season. The win came after a hard-fought match that saw Sunderland’s penalty attempt saved by David Raya.
The momentum of the game shifted dramatically in the second half. Sunderland was awarded a penalty, but Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya saved Enzo Le Fee’s shot. Immediately after, Bruno Guimaraes scored a goal, curling the ball in off the crossbar, to give Arsenal the lead. This goal came just 121 seconds after the saved penalty.
Late in the game, Bukayo Saka scored a penalty after being fouled by Reinildo Mandava, sealing Arsenal’s victory. Mandava was also sent off for receiving a second yellow card. Arteta described the week as ‘huge’ for Arsenal, following wins against Chelsea and Napoli.
“It's a huge win, a huge week as well,” Arteta said. “Winning against Chelsea, winning in Napoli and now here - a really tough place to come, what a beautiful atmosphere and a really well-organised, really well-gelled team, that makes life really difficult for you. We were on the front foot right from the beginning…We were on top, then an element of suffering…David makes an unbelievable save afterwards, and then the magic moments that Bruno did as a finisher, it doesn't get much better than that - an unbelievable goal, and unbelievable assist to put Bukayo through, and we earn the right to win the points.”
