The Colorado Buffaloes defeated Weber State 52-21 on Saturday, improving to 2-0, but head coach Deion Sanders expressed dissatisfaction with his team’s performance, citing mistakes and a lack of killer instinct.
Despite the dominant score, Colorado committed 13 penalties for 107 yards, turned the ball over multiple times, and missed scoring opportunities. Sanders confronted his players in the locker room after the game, questioning if they were truly a “winning team.” He stated, “Is that a winning team? … Is this winning activity? What y'all going to do about it? I always have to do something about it. I always have to check it. I always have to check everything.”
Sanders challenged players who appeared content with the win, saying, “And the sad thing about it, some of y’all are satisfied with that. You definitely ain't no dog. You ain't no killer and you definitely ain't no pro.” He warned them that extra conditioning would be in store if they celebrated too much, stating, “If you could be satisfied with that tomorrow, if I were y’all, I wouldn't even go out and party and kick it, because it's going to be a lot of conditioning tomorrow.”
Sanders emphasized his higher aspirations, explaining, “Because this is not the winning recipe to win it all. You guys are happy with winning the game. I'm trying to win it all. Do y'all understand that?”
Quarterback Julian Lewis threw for 366 yards and four touchdowns, totaling five scores, while running back Micah Welch became the first Colorado player since 2022 to rush for 100 yards in a game. Colorado will next face Northwestern.
