Ukraine conducted a large-scale drone attack on Moscow, targeting an oil refinery and disrupting commercial air travel. The attack, which occurred overnight, involved nearly 200 drones, with several hitting the city’s largest oil refinery, according to reports. Airports in Moscow were temporarily shut down as a result.
According to the Financial Times, nearly 200 drones struck the Russian capital. Newsmax reported that this attack disrupted commercial flights at Moscow airports and marked the second time in a week that a major Moscow oil refinery was hit. The New York Times stated the attack appeared to be the biggest wave of drone strikes on Russia’s capital since the start of the war, and shut down the city’s airports for several hours.
Mayor Sergey Sobyanin stated that Ukrainian drones struck Moscow and the Moscow region, hitting an oil refinery in Kapotnya. He also reported that air defense forces intercepted 137 drones on approach to the city, while Russia's defense ministry said 555 drones were shot down across the country, with 180 intercepted around Moscow alone, as reported by the Japan Times.
Several residential buildings were reportedly hit as a result of the attack, according to Politico.eu. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called the strike a “fully justified response to Russian strikes on our cities and communities,” as reported by the Independent.
