UK scientists are developing a vaccine for an Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), with the vaccine expected to be ready for trials within months. The director-general of the World Health Organisation (WHO) has stated that the Ebola outbreak in the DRC is "spreading rapidly."
The vaccine is being developed by the Oxford Vaccine Group, according to the Telegraph. The new vaccine uses the same technology behind the AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine.
The rare species of Ebola involved in the outbreak is known as Bundibugyo, the BBC reported. This strain kills around a third of those infected and currently has no proven vaccine.
The outbreak in the DRC has prompted international health officials to monitor the situation closely. The WHO director-general's assessment of the outbreak "spreading rapidly" underscores the urgency of vaccine development efforts.
