Two news organizations have published reports identifying a central figure in a people smuggling network responsible for a significant portion of small boat crossings in the English Channel. The BBC reported that the individual is a 28-year-old Iraqi Kurd who has evaded arrest by using the alias “Kardo Ranya.” The Daily Mail identified the man as Kardo Jaf and stated that he is thought to lead a vast international smuggling operation with routes stretching from Afghanistan to the UK. The Daily Mail further reported that Jaf’s network is responsible for more than half of all Channel crossings. The BBC’s account noted that the smuggler has avoided law enforcement by operating under a pseudonym. Neither report indicated that an arrest has been made. The disclosures come amid ongoing scrutiny of irregular migration across the Channel.
