Two individuals, a 60-year-old man and a 42-year-old woman, have been arrested in London on suspicion of assisting Iran’s intelligence service. The Metropolitan Police conducted searches at properties in north and north-west London on June 24 and September 9 as part of the investigation into offenses under the National Security Act (NSA). Both individuals have been released on bail with strict conditions until late October.
Commander Helen Flanagan, head of Counter Terrorism Policing London, stated that the arrests are part of a marked increase in national security and state threat-related work over the past year. She emphasized that police “will not hesitate to take action” if they suspect activity threatening the UK or public safety. While acknowledging public concern, Flanagan stressed there is currently “no imminent threat to the wider public.”
The Metropolitan Police confirmed the investigation is unconnected to recent incidents targeting Jewish and Iranian communities in London, nor is it linked to events surrounding the Jewish High Holy Days. The arrests concern offenses under section three of the NSA – assisting a foreign intelligence service. The UK’s terror threat level remains at severe, and authorities continue to urge public vigilance, advising people to report anything suspicious.
