President Donald Trump’s special envoys, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, conducted meetings with Ukrainian and Russian officials over the weekend in an effort to facilitate an end to the Russia-Ukraine war. The pair first met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kyiv on Sunday, following talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow on Saturday. Zelensky stated on X that he had “a good conversation” with the U.S. diplomats and that “the main thing is to achieve peace for Ukraine – a dignified, reliable, and lasting peace,” adding that all efforts are directed toward this goal.
Witkoff described the discussions in Kyiv as “substantive” and “important,” while the Kremlin characterized its meeting with the envoys as “constructive and useful,” though no major breakthrough was reported. Putin ordered a three-day pause in fighting coinciding with the meeting. The Washington Examiner reported that the talks were “encouraging.” The Trump administration has stated its intent to end the war, which has been ongoing for over four and a half years since Russian forces invaded Ukrainian territory.
The U.S. envoys also conferred with representatives from the United Kingdom, France, and Germany during their visit to Kyiv. Witkoff is the special envoy to the Middle East, and Kushner is the special envoy for peace and the president’s son-in-law. The outcome of these diplomatic efforts, and whether they will translate into concrete progress toward a lasting peace agreement, remains to be seen.
