Five people died and five were injured Sunday when an Amazon cargo plane overran a runway at Miami International Airport, striking multiple vehicles and erupting in flames. The Boeing 767-300, operating as Prime Air Flight 7598 from San Juan, Puerto Rico, came to rest in a field adjacent to the airport around 2 p.m. local time. Three of the injured are in critical condition. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue responded with over 60 units, battling a fire and extricating individuals trapped in vehicles and the aircraft itself. A fuel leak also occurred, requiring mitigation efforts.
The Federal Aviation Administration has launched an investigation, with the National Transportation Safety Board deploying a “go team” to examine the crash. The plane was operated by 21 Air, a North Carolina-based cargo carrier contracted by Amazon. While the cause remains under investigation, authorities have not ruled out weather conditions, as thunderstorms and wind gusts were reported in the area at the time of the landing. The airport was temporarily grounded, with a ground stop lasting several hours.
Amazon issued a statement expressing condolences and pledging full cooperation with the investigation. This is not the first incident involving an Amazon Air flight; in 2019, a similar crash in Texas was attributed to pilot error. The NTSB will hold a media briefing on Monday to provide further details. As of late Sunday, the investigation is ongoing and the identities of those killed have not been released.
