Three decades after the death of rapper Tupac Shakur, Duane ‘Keffe D’ Davis, a former California gang boss, is the first person to be prosecuted in connection with the shooting. The trial began after decades of speculation surrounding Shakur’s murder.
Davis, according to Al Jazeera, is accused of providing the gun used in the drive-by shooting that killed Shakur in Las Vegas in September 1996. He was arrested in September 2023 and has pleaded not guilty. Prosecutors allege Davis orchestrated the shooting, motivated by a rivalry between Shakur and Orlando Anderson, a member of the South Side Compton Crips gang.
Davis has previously discussed his involvement in the shooting in interviews and his 2019 memoir. Al Jazeera reports that Davis admitted to being in the car from which the shots were fired, but claimed he did not pull the trigger. The trial is expected to delve into these past statements and the evidence linking Davis to the crime. The motive, as presented by prosecutors, stems from an altercation between Shakur and Anderson earlier that night, following a Mike Tyson boxing match.
