The 53rd Telluride Film Festival began Friday with a Patron Brunch and screening of ‘Wild Horse Nine.’ Numerous actors, directors, and filmmakers attended, with several arriving directly from the Venice Film Festival. The festival will feature Q&As, panels, and press opportunities for attendees.
Among those at the annual Patron Brunch were Andrew Scott, star of *Elsinore*; Jesse Eisenberg, director of *The Debut*, and Julianne Moore, its star; Rami Malek, star of *The Man I Love*; John Malkovich and Sam Rockwell, stars of *Wild Horse Nine*; Danny Boyle, director of *Ink*, and Jack O’Connell, its star; Sandra Hüller, star of *Fatherland* and *Rose*; Ron Howard, director of *Avedon*; and Léa Seydoux, who appears in three festival films: *Alpha Gang*, *Gentle Monster*, and *The Unknown*. The team behind *Club Kid*, including director/star Jordan Firstman, stars Cara Delevingne and Diego Calva, and Colleen Camp, were also present.
Mike Leigh, the 83-year-old writer/director of *Tender Loving Care*, was unable to attend due to health concerns, but his film was represented by its cast, excluding Kate O’Flynn. Bleecker Street, the film’s distributor, provided “A Film by Mike Leigh” hats for brunch attendees. Festival regulars like Danny Boyle, who previously presented *Slumdog Millionaire*, *127 Hours*, and *Steve Jobs*, mingled with those like Julianne Moore, who hadn’t attended since 1994 with *Vanya on 42nd Street*. Caleb Deschanel, a veteran cinematographer, was also present as part of the team behind the unfinished animated film *Wildwood*, clips of which are being shown.
The teams from *Ink* and *Wild Horse Nine* arrived directly from Venice, where their films received standing ovations. Jesse Eisenberg expressed frustration at the lack of time to view other films, while Andrew Scott said he planned to prioritize seeing the “gay movies,” including *La Bola Negra*, *Club Kid*, and *A Long Winter*. The co-directors of *La Bola Negra*, known as “Los Javis,” were honored at Cannes and are considered a primary contender for Netflix this season. Netflix also hosted a listening party for its documentary feature *The Disciple*, about the Wu-Tang-Clan’s *Once Upon a Time in Shaolin* album, of which only one copy was ever made.
